Give Thanks in all Circumstances
On this Thanksgiving Sunday, Paul M reminded us to give thanks to God in all circumstances. It’s a form of spirituality where we acknowledge God as the giver of all that we have, and we respond by living lives of gratitude, generosity, and grace.
We celebrated World Communion Sunday. The Corinthian church forgot about why they were eating together, so they reverted to old cultural practices where some were excluded. Paul told them it wasn’t right. When they get together, they should “do this in remembrance of me.” The this in the phrase is to remember the lengths God went to reconcile us. In other words, when we receive communion, we remember the new creation that was ushered in by the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. When we come to the Lord’s table, we come because of God’s grace, not because we are worthy.

In 2020, the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) is celebrating 100 years of sharing God’s love and compassion with people in the name of Christ. As MCC is an important part of First Mennonite Church's identity and mission, we set this Sunday morning aside to celebrate this significant event. We reflected on 2 Corinthians 5:16-20, in which Paul speaks of New Creation and the ministry of reconciliation. In many ways, this text stands at the heart of the church’s mission.
