On the Road to Readiness

This is the first Sunday of Advent.  Mark describes the Advent of God into the world in ways that are sudden, unexpected, and surprising.  It’s like a man who has gone on a journey of an unknown length and left his servants in charge of the household.  While the owner is gone, the servants are expected to keep the place operational and be ready to welcome the owner upon his return.  Getting ready for God’s Advent requires spiritual preparations, and requires us to pack in a certain way. We need things in our suitcase that will keep us awake to God’s Advent among us.

Practice the basics of faith

This is the last in a 3-part sermon series on Ecclesiastes. There are two main themes in Ecclesiastes. The first is that life is fleeting and transitory—like vapour. And the second theme is that we all die. In the face of such a reality, how are we to live? Ecclesiastes says it all comes down to practising the basics of the faith again and again: fear God and keep God’s commandments. This is the beginning of wisdom.

Terminal Living

This is part two of a three-part sermon series on Ecclesiastes. The focus is on the human condition. We are finite creatures who are born, grown up, grow old, and die. Knowing that we are terminal can make a difference in the way we live each day. Because the time of our lives does not go on forever, we can learn to treasure the time being, to live today in gratitude for the time that God has allotted us. This is the beginning of wisdom.
