Do this in remembrance of me
We celebrated World Communion Sunday. The Corinthian church forgot about why they were eating together, so they reverted to old cultural practices where some were excluded. Paul told them it wasn’t right. When they get together, they should “do this in remembrance of me.” The this in the phrase is to remember the lengths God went to reconcile us. In other words, when we receive communion, we remember the new creation that was ushered in by the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. When we come to the Lord’s table, we come because of God’s grace, not because we are worthy.

Journey toward Reconciliation
In 2020, the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) is celebrating 100 years of sharing God’s love and compassion with people in the name of Christ. As MCC is an important part of First Mennonite Church's identity and mission, we set this Sunday morning aside to celebrate this significant event. We reflected on 2 Corinthians 5:16-20, in which Paul speaks of New Creation and the ministry of reconciliation. In many ways, this text stands at the heart of the church’s mission.

Be Transformed by the New World
The current debate about face masks is like a conversation between people living in different worlds! In what world is it good to wear a face mask? When Jesus was raised from the dead a whole new world dawned. To be a Christian is to have had one’s eyes opened to a new reality—God’s new world breaking into this world. Christ expects us to live according to this new reality, living into the world as it is and will be rather than merely conforming to the old and defeated world. In Christ, a new world has come. The apostle Paul urges us to be transformed so that we can live our lives for others as a sacrifice to God.
